Making Lowertown cool again
This little place used to be an utterly failed coffee shop brought to you by the owner's of neighboring club Station4. Then something fantastic happened- New Ownership!! It took a little bit of searching but the place found its niche and now its pretty hopping most nights.
Don't let the name fool you they've expanded the music there well beyond just jazz. Tuesday nights are salsa, and Thursday is a jampacked open-mic night that has been adopted by the student body of the McNally Smith College of Music. I've seen some great shows here over the past several months from an amazing run of bi-weekly gigs featuring the New Standards (Chan Poling (Suburbs), John Munson (Semisonic/Trip Shakespeare), and Steve Roehm) a few months ago to Alicia Wiley stripping things down to the bare essentials in a solo set. You can find great local acts as well as some amazing national acts on their stage.
Its a full service bar with a nice mix of slightly fancier appetizers, and a good selection of wines and beers. The atmosphere of the place is pretty nice- lots of exposed brick, woodwork, and glass and they keep it nice and dark. There's a decent numbe of tables, bar seating, and an additional lofted seating area. If you're lucky you can even get one of the two cozy couch nooks in the back corner.
The owners of this place are great, and their doing it because they really enjoy it. Rumour has it they may be moving into some larger digs in the near future with a much bigger stage, etc.
