Awesome food, though the quality of any given item depends on the particular cook and what mood they're in that day. Excellent prices, awesoke politics, my favorite hang-out.  I'm just responding to someone's request for a vegan eatery in Mpls, and am annoyed that I have to fill out this whole damned recommendation form instead of just being able to reply. Anyway, you didn't say if you were looking for a classy place or not. Hard Times is a dive, but at least it's not smokey anymore. The food is pretty good and it's definitely all vegetarian, with many vegan options. They have an open kitchen so you can see that it doesn't look as dirty as the rest of the the place. Definitely not a place for a romantic candlelit dinner date, but you might have a fun time. I recommend the Tempeh Reuben sandwich. - Eric , posted 09/16/05 |

in 1996 or 1997 or something i was in minneapolis and it was warm and humid. or maybe that was me. i thought dinkytown was pretty lame and so i crossed the bridge that i slept under also and headed for hard times cafe. there i ran into some friends from before including smiley who was a individual by all means. i also learned that you can get really high off coffee. really. hard times is the place for coffee. and if you're there you should get nachos too. tell em i sent ya. they like that. - wick , posted 08/28/05 |

Hard Times is a worker owned and run cafe/vegetarian restaurant. We're open twenty~two hours a day, serving a huge variety of vegetarian and vegan food as well as fresh baked goodies. Everything is made to order, no frozen/pre-packaged crap. We also have the best caffee ANYWHERE; fair trade, organic, and made fresh all day in press pots for the best flavor and the strongest cup o' joe you can buy. AND it's only a dollar. If you've never been here you have to check it out. And if you we're here a long time ago, you need to come back and check out how much better the place keeps getting. This is the place in Minneapolis to hang out and read a book or just relax. And if your not a total jerk, you can hang out all day with out being hassled or asked to move along.
