Excellent album!
I'm usually quite picky in my musical tastes and rarely bother to buy the entire CD as I like one or two songs from the whole compilation, and get bored with it shortly.
This CD is a complete exception.
I accidentally heard a colleague listening to it and practically grabbed him on the collar, demanding to know who the singer is and the album name. As soon as I got the information I ordered a copy. It's the only thing I'm listening to for the past couple of days.
The album tells of the story of Aino, a maiden who turned herself into a salmon to gain freedom. The story is a part of the Finnish legend Kalevala. Storyline is beautifully woven with both Finnish and English lyrics, music is strong and top quality. As Ruth MacKenzie put it, 'It is created to call forth the untamable wild thing within all of us'. You can quite easily sense the savage rhythms as well as the abundance of exotic, ancient sounds throughout the album. The tunes are decidedly and evidently Nordic and very captivating.
Don't buy a copy! Buy two or three, lest one gets lost or scratched!
This work deserves a 5-star rating simply because this page does not let me go beyond it. All of the songs are beautiful but especially 'Swimming on the Surface', 'Medley for Swedish Säckpipa', 'Flowed a Tear' and of course 'Give Us Room to Roar' are truly exceptional.
Huge, heartfelt thanks go to Ruth MacKenzie and to all those who contributed in creation of this wonderful masterpiece.
